About me

Katie A. Cormier is a board-certified family nurse practitioner at MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. She specializes in volunteer bone-marrow and stem-cell donations to treat acute leukemia, sickle cell, multiple myeloma, lymphoma, and other blood disorders. She also is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society – Arlington Chapter.

Katie’s approach to care centers on nurturing respectful and compassionate relationships that prioritize the overall well-being of volunteer donors. Katie performs medical exams that include physicals, lab work, and imaging screenings. At these appointments, she begins by empathetically listening to donors and clearly answering all their questions. She then collaborates with an experienced team of clinicians to collect stem cells using apheresis (outpatient blood draw) or bone marrow (surgical soft-tissue removal) procedures. During every step of the donation process, she provides comprehensive follow-up care and insightful education.

Katie is dedicated to advancing the use of mindfulness and other self-relaxation techniques to support donors’ mental health. She is particularly interested in treatments for blood disorders using cellular therapies. These types of therapies can lead to personalized treatments, improved outcomes, and even cures. She also is proud to be a part of one of the largest bone-marrow collection centers in the country for non-related donors. Referring physicians should know that Katie is committed to providing high-quality and timely grafts to ensure better patient outcomes.

Philosophy of care

“People who volunteer to provide stem cells or bone marrow share invaluable gifts. Such life-saving offerings strengthen not only recipients but also their families and communities. That’s why I’m passionate about ensuring the care, safety, and mental health of donors. They are true inspirations.

In my free time, I enjoy reading books and exploring the outdoors. These hobbies are linked to my interests in expanding knowledge and appreciating nature. In my profession, stem-cell therapy is like a book of endless possibilities just waiting to be discovered. Every day, I look forward to contributing to the next chapter of this exciting branch of medicine.”
