The MedStar Health—Georgetown/Washington Hospital Center Fellowship Program in Musculoskeletal Oncology

This fellowship, established more than 40 years ago, is a one-year program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and focuses on preparing qualified orthopedic surgeons for academic and clinical careers in orthopedic oncology.

It features a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of  musculoskeletal tumors in the pediatric and adult population with specific focus on advanced surgical techniques including minimally invasive approaches and computerized navigation; endoprosthetic reconstruction for limb salvage including expandable implants for skeletally immature patients; soft tissue dissection and flap reconstruction; as well as complex amputations including hemipelvectomy and forequarter amputations.

Our team's commitment to providing the optimal treatment for our patients is enhanced by our fellows acting as patient advocates helping patients navigate the healthcare system. As such, fellows have an opportunity to learn the intricacies of providing world-class care to patients of all ages and circumstances.

Why train here

This fellowship program has an established national reputation for providing innovative surgical and medical care to patients of all ages with musculoskeletal tumors. Training takes place at MedStar Health Washington Hospital Center as well as MedStar Health Georgetown University Hospital and Children’s National Medical Center.

Graduates of our program are fully prepared to work in the field of orthopedic oncology and are very competitive in the job market, with many going on to develop and lead their own programs across the country.

Curriculum

Our curriculum emphasizes the importance of developing the skills needed to care for sarcoma patients in a multidisciplinary environment. Emphasis is placed on the proper diagnosis, workup, treatment planning, and follow-up care for these complex patients.

Training includes advanced surgical skills and techniques needed for limb-sparing surgery, surgical approaches and relevant anatomy, musculoskeletal imaging, and orthopedic pathology. Fellows are also encouraged to develop the leadership skills necessary to build and develop an orthopedic oncology program.

Musculoskeletal Oncology offers a unique and varied approach to orthopedic surgery. It includes expertise in the following areas:

  • Advanced diagnostic techniques, including minimally invasive biopsies
  • Interpretation of musculoskeletal lesions on cross-sectional imaging, including MRI, CT, PET/CT scans
  • Plastic surgical techniques, specifically the use of local muscle rotation flaps
  • Vascular surgical techniques that include exploration of all the major neurovascular structures including the axillary vessels, the brachial plexus, the retroperitoneal space, the iliac vessels, and all of the extremity vessels.
  • Major resections of the shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle, and lower extremity joints with various techniques of reconstruction to include prosthetic replacements and intercalary replacements.

Expertise in all aspects of surgery is essential for a surgeon to successfully manage orthopedic oncology patients. The fellows trained at this institution become lead surgeons capable of performing all aspects of major operative procedures.

The program also stresses the development of clinical research skills. All fellows are engaged in multiple research projects, following IRB submission and approval. Use of a departmental database and electronic records facilitates development of research cohorts for patients with rare diseases. Hands-on involvement with photographing gross specimens, histology, radiographs, and varied imaging studies helps to foster greater interest in biology of these diseases and facilitates the rapid accumulation of knowledge needed for independent practice in this field.

Conferences

As part of our clinically based fellowship training program in Musculoskeletal Oncology, we offer several category 1 CME- certified conferences featuring a multidisciplinary approach:

  • A bi-monthly MedStar Health system-wide multidisciplinary sarcoma conference

  • Weekly pre-operative orthopedic oncology conference

Participation in Orthopedic Grand Rounds and Orthopedic Journal Clubs at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown University Medical Center is highly encouraged.
