At the age of 38 this mom of 3 children ages 8- and 12-years old twins would eventually find out the lump in my right breast was Triple Negative Stage 3 breast cancer. The lump I thought was just a cyst was breast cancer. I was not even at the age to get a mammogram, but I have breast cancer.

I instantly started researching this diagnosis and stumbled across this article. To know that I’m three times more likely to get this aggressive form of cancer verse my white counterparts was mind boggling and scary to say the least.

Monique, mother of 3 children, underwent successful treatment for breast cancer at MedStar Health.

I was blessed to have a loving and encouraging support system who worried about my lump more than me to force me to be checked. My journey with seeking medical help was limited due to my state insurance and not having a primary care physician. I was set back from receiving immediate referrals for care and even life changing medications. However, through my struggle I had a supportive MedStar Health team including doctors, nurses, and clerical staff that ensured me that I will have the needed care. They went above and beyond for me and provided me with essential resources, encouragement, and support. They encouraged me to fight even harder to be here for my children. Because of them, my support system, and strong faith I am here today!

This last year of my life was the hardest and I still struggle daily but I know I have a medical team who will do everything they can to help me. I am fortunate to have family and work support to help me through my day to day. If any lesson I learned it is to always put yourself first and listen to your body. If I’m not good how can my children be good. I have to prioritize my mental and physical health to continue to fight to be there for my children who are my WHOLE life!
