The 2024 Bennathan Patient Safety Lecture

Artificial Intelligence for Safer Care: Opportunities and Challenges

Wednesday, April 10, Program begins at 6:30 p.m.
To join, visit Facebook.com/MedStarHealth

Named in honor of the late professor Esra Bennathan, Emeritus Professor of Political Economy, University of Bristol UK, the Bennathan Patient Safety Lecture will continue a tradition of learning, teaching, and sharing, all of which were woven into the fabric of his life.

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare is expanding exponentially and is poised to make substantive and disruptive changes to the healthcare landscape. There is a growing body of evidence demonstrating the positive impact that AI is having on healthcare delivery (e.g., reducing burden on doctors and nurses, aiding clinical decision support, and lessening human resources challenges). Simultaneously, the application of AI “at the bedside” raises important concerns and questions among patients, their families, and clinicians alike, including:

  • the applicability/efficacy of AI in the context of complex medical decision-making;
  • bio-ethical concerns associated with AI (e.g., data security, autonomy, accountability, privacy);
  • AI’s influence on health equity (e.g., potential for contributing to bias); and
  • patients’ perceptions of its use in their care (e.g., trust, transparency).

The 2024 Bennathan Patient Safety Lecture will serve as an interdisciplinary forum to address these issues.
