MedStar Health spine services incorporates a team approach where you are cared for not by one physician, but rather our group of experts including pain management and physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists, interventional radiologists, physiatrists, neurologists, rheumatologists, spine surgeons, neurosurgeons, specialized pharmacists as well as certified physical and occupational therapists. This approach ensures that you get the best possible combination of treatment options based on your specific type of back pain diagnosis, including your examination findings, lifestyle, occupation, and recreational interests.
Our specialists treat orthopedic-related pain related to the spine, which include spine surgeries, the correction of failed spine surgeries, and neck surgery. We also provide treatment of all types of orthopedic pain, both surgically and non-surgically.
Spine services
Surgical and non-surgical treatment for back and spine pain and injuries.
Spine disorders expert diagnosis
Your first visit to the Spine Center at MedStar Harbor Hospital will include a thorough history and physical. Your surgeon may also recommend tests such as:
- X-rays or CT scans: to show the alignment of your bones and whether you have osteoarthritis or possible tumors
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): can reveal herniated discs or problems with internal body structures
- Myelography: uses dye to show areas where your spinal cord may be getting pinched by the vertebrae in your back. This may be done if a patient cannot get an MRI
- Bone scans: detect bone tumors or compression fractures caused by osteoporosis
- Electrodiagnostic studies: can confirm nerve compression caused by herniated discs or spinal stenosis
- Electromyography (EMG): assesses nerve or muscle damage
Your surgeon will also discuss treatment options with you once your evaluation and tests are finished.

- Brainlab®’s Kolibri™ image guidance system — tracking surgical instruments in relation to a patient’s anatomy, the Brainlab technology helps the surgeon in planning incisions, finding pedicle entry points, trajectories, and screw insertion points. In certain cases, this image-guidance technology enables surgeons to avoid performing conventional open surgery
